Wrightsville Beach to Southport

mile 284-mile 311

Pulled anchor in the morning and headed down the waterway. There was a swimming event and we saw swimmers coming along the anchorage. Every third one had a bright yellow buoy. They had on swim caps and wetsuits. I was not sure if they were training or if it was an actual event.

We eased down behind the Carolina beaches avoiding dredging operations and into Snow’s Cut. There were some logs floating there but we could see them easily. We then entered the Cape Fear river which is wide and deep.

We had the current with us and arrived in Southport around 1130. We docked easily on the outside of the long pier. We were fixing lunch when another boat came by way too close to us. He was pulling into the dock to take the spot in front of us and turned too close. He ended up hitting the dock in front of us. If he had turned back to avoid it, his stern would have swung into our boat, likely damaging both boats. His grill grazed our bowsprit but there was no damage.

The dockhands came to help out and got him secured. He came and apologized to us. Glad it ended up being just a little excitement.

In the afternoon, we went to downtown Southport with Jeff and Deb. We looked around the shops and sat by the waterfront. It was a beautiful day. We had an early dinner at Provision Company and some molten lava cake at Fishy Fishy, (would eat there next time) and came home with William, a very nice Uber driver who loved Southport. They had a great deal of flooding in the unnamed storm this fall with only one way in and out of town for several weeks.
