The White Express

It was predicted to be windy so we cancelled plans for a fly fishing trip. That meant that the whole group could go to pick up the motorboat. Alison from the boat rental texted to say that Lee on the White Express was headed to pick us up. We would go from Kevali house to the rental office near Brown’s marine to check in.

We packed our snorkel gear with plans to snorkel at the Red Shanks Moriah Harbour Cay area as it would be more sheltered. Lee picked us up and we flew across the harbour and across more shallow areas with a wild turn into the channel at Brown’s. Sara was in the wet seat on the way across the harbour.

We found out that the White Express would be our boat for the duration. It had good seating and storage. The only problem was that its t top made it too high to enter Lake Victoria, for dockage at George Town but it would get us many other places.

We snorkeled the hole and cave we had found at Red Shanks and saw fish. The water was a little murky with the winds. David managed to find a lobster under a rock, however. We then snorkeled the ledge where I had seen starfish and we saw several there.

We then anchored off the mangrove area and walked to the beach. The beach had a lot of small seeds that had washed up which, along with a perfectly sized piece of bamboo, provided the perfect opportunity for some batting practice.

Everyone was a bit hungry when we got back to the boat so we decided to try a local spot for lunch, Cheaters Restaurant. The anchoring was a little sketchy and we had to wade in amongst the mangroves but we all made it and then crossed the road to the restaurant. The owner told us we could have chicken or fish so we ordered some of each. The fish was in a tomato sauce and the chicken was fried. The sides were coleslaw, mac and cheese, white rice and plantains. It was a large plate of food. We got drinks from the cooler. Some local people were eating on the porch, we were inside. It was quite good.

After heading back to Kevali, we decided to do an ocean swim, beach walk and maybe walk over to Chat N Chill in hopes of seeing some sting rays. It was late in the day and still windy. We walked over to the ocean side. Michael swam at Marina’s beach but it was a bit rough. We made our way back across and waded over to the Chat N Chill side.

It was too late in the day for the normal ray activity but we did see a ray jump and flap off the beach. We watched the sunset and listened to the conch horns. We headed back to get back to the house by dark.

Dinner was boat pizza. There were hot showers for all and banana bread for dessert. We checked the motor boat at the Kevali dock before taking the dinghy back to the boat.
