Charleston arrival

Arrived at Charleston harbor with the sun rising behind us. It was easy to navigate into the harbor with calm seas. Except when the container ship passed in the channel. We had experienced the steep wake of these things in the bay so David was prepared. We turned into it a bit and washed our decks but avoided the rail to rail roll.

We headed to our marina by the Ravenel bridge. There were warning signs we did not heed. The marina sent us a picture of our slip and it looked impossible. The current was also raging under the bridge. We had to turn before the bridge and go into the marina with the current.

We should have stopped right there but we continued. Because of the current, we headed into the slip way too fast with no way to slow down. The dockhands held us with all their might but we still hit our bob stay on the side of the dock. Luckily there was a rubber bumper. Then David had to keep our stern from hitting a motor boat. No boats hit, no damage done to our boat, a little spot on the rubber bumper which can be easily replaced. Overall, a good outcome but very traumatic and stressful at the end of a long day. One of those mistakes in the “what doesn’t harm you, grows you” category.

The next mistake, was more comical. In my haste to make a nice comforting breakfast, I must have dropped a raw sausage link on the floor. I then proceeded to step in it to a great extent, to the point where sausage was in every groove of both sneakers and tracked from the table to the galley. I noticed when the floors were feeling slippery. Boat floors needed cleaning anyway. Sneakers had been cleaned in Beaufort but were cleaned again.

We napped , showered, and then checked out the marina a bit. The marina building is an old jail. They have restored it, keeping some of the iron bars. We did not feel like going anywhere. Ate at the marina restaurant. We were the only ones there but the food was excellent. David won at Chauncey despite my rolling a Chauncey of fives. Early to bed.
