Beaufort, NC Day 3

We are still in Beaufort. planning to wait out the bad weather expected tonight through friday. Austin to arrive friday and we are planning to take a travel window to head outside to Charleston.

It is calm here and you would never ever know a storm is coming. We pulled Fat Tuesday out of the water to secure her on deck and fastened our boat to a back piling as the wind will come from behind us a bit tonight. Took the courtesy car to town and fillled propane and went to post office to mail some gifts.

We met Island Mike who arrived on a blue ketch that caught David’s eye when it pulled into the harbor. Mike used to work on a private island, gardener and caretaker. Moved to boat about 7 years ago. It is a custom ketch named Eagle. Now he travels in the winter and does sunset charters in the afternoon and teaches motor yacht owners how to drive their boats. “The reality is that people have so much money that they are buying super yachts as their first boats,” he said. Not my reality.

Apparently insurance companies have had a problem with this phenomenon and they are now requiring these people to have 100 hours with a captain before insurance will cover them solo. Enter Island Mike, good niche for him. This all takes place in Connecticut. Then he goes wherever he wants in the off season.

In the afternoon, we checked out the laundry facility which also has ice cream. Mostly we checked out the cappuccino crunch and decided to do laundry tomorrow during worse weather.

Took advantage of the nice weather to bike around the island. Stopped at the museum, closed still but store open where they are raffling a beautiful wooden tender. Bought one ticket. Saw a map of all the shipwrecks off the Carolina Coast. Impressive. We biked through neighborhoods, bright houses , many very old, well kept, porches, decorative trim, people using their porches, looking up to wave. Checked out town creek marinas, so many motor boats at Homer Smith’s Marina, all on lifts. Then we biked along the waterfront where many were out walking.

Junked out on some loaded nachos. texted with Fishes. they are going to try to get around hatteras this weekend. Too tired to work on anything. Chauncey and bed, David won again despite my rolling a Chauncey of 3’s. Early to bed anticipating some late night awakenings as weather rolls in.
