Sail to Calabash Bay

We wanted to see some of the north end of Long Island so we decided to make the move to Calabash Bay. Calabash is known for being a little rolly with swells that wrap around from the Atlantic. The swells in the ocean had been high but were predicted to settle a bit over the next few days. The winds were also supposed to be calmer over the next few days and we hoped for an opportunity to explore the north end of the island.

We headed across the bank with a gentle east to northeast wind and we were able to sail on a broad reach and then a close reach as the wind shifted. It was one of our more beautiful sails, just perfect. We took our time because we were enjoying the sail so much.

We tried some fishing but no bites. We did not have a long stretch in deep water.

We arrived at Calabash in the afternoon and tried to go to the main anchorage north. It was rolly and at one point we saw less than 2 feet under our keel. We decided to turn around and go to the south anchorage. We were rolling there too but we were in deeper water right off a beautiful beach. We decided to stay on the boat for sunset and explore the beach in the morning.
