Coosaw River to Turtle Island anchorage

It was an ICW day through South Carolina and into Georgia. The goal was to get close enough to Tybee inlet to make a daytime offshore run possible tomorrow. There is little wind tomorrow and it will be warm for motoring. It was cold when we set out.

On our route we passed Beaufort SC and Hilton Head. They both looked like fun stops. Dafuskie island is another interesting place. It was a plantation like some of the other islands, known best for cotton. It was taken by Union troops in the Civil war and after the war, freed slaves were given land ownership. A black community thrived there with oystering the main industry until the 1950’s when pollution in the Savannah river destroyed the industry. The island currently is caught in a battle between preservation and development. There still is no bridge to the island and no cars on the island. There is a ferry and a nice marina there.

We had one swing bridge on our route, the Lady’s Island Bridge. The boat in front of us waited so we could go through on the same opening.

It was really windy and we thought it would be quite rough down closer to the inlet so we chose an anchorage just north of the last cut before the inlet. It was pretty marsh. Once anchored, we headed down below to get out of the wind. It was fairly calm in the anchorage despite the wind howling. It had warmed up a bit however, and we were comfortable down below.
