Dowry Creek to Long Creek

Awakened to clear skies with the beaver moon setting as the Sun rose.Or neighbors Debbie and Jeff on Nautilus set off for river dunes. We were in awe as they backed straight out of their slip. We pulled ourselves back shortly thereafter inching out with lines and pushing off pilings before daring the reverse gear.

We learned yesterday about Bob’s 423 facebook group where icw updates are posted. We had a difficult time finding the post on the coast guard website, but someone on the facebook group had posted . The Onslow bridge is closed for four days starting November 21. This means we will be delayed taking the waterway to Southport where we planned to meet Austin for an outside passage.

We headed down the pungo River a beautiful wide stretch with good water.and a parade of southward boats. The wind was behind us after the bend and we were able to sail with our Genoa and turn the motor off. Pungo river, Pamlico river, bay river. As we crossed the Pamlico river realized that we were sailing with our bumper still out, a blow to the bit of pride we were daring to feel.

We entered a canal part of the river after several rocky motor boat passings.. Interesting stretch with lots of fisherman catching fish one after the other. We think spelled trout. In another narrow stretch we passed the famous shrimp docks and shrimp fleet. We decided not to stop mostly because of docking anxiety and not being prepared for the stop. Also unclear where to dock with busy boat ramp beyond.

Once out of the canal, we entered the bay river and shortly turned off for Bonner bay and long creek. We anchored behind beautiful marsh in good water.Lowered the dinghy and rowed around the place. Tried a little fishing, one bite, no fish.. Private land for hunting, gates across some guts. We saw ducks and geese flying in the evening.

Back to boat for enchiladas, sunset. November mosquitoes emerged at dusk as the wind dropped but did not attack.Fixed the gimbal latch on the stove.
